Praful Patel loses Civil Aviation Ministry but he is elevated to cabinet rank with the portfolio of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise

Kamal Nath, who held the post of Union Cabinet Minister of Road Transport and Highways is made the Urban Development Minister. He served as Union Minister of State for the Environment and Forests (Independent) from 1991 to 1995, then as Union Minister of State for Textiles (Independent) from 1995 to 1996.

The reshuffle saw Kapil Sibal retaining Telecom and HRD, and losing the Science and Technology portfolio. In 2009, he was reinducted in the second Manmohan Singh government and took charge of the key Human Resource Development ministry.

Under attack for his alleged failure in curbing the rising prices of essential commodities, senior minister Sharad Pawar was relieved of the charge of consumer affairs and food though he retained the agriculture portfolio. Pawar, however, has got additional charge of food processing industries.

Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi gets additional charge of Civil Aviation. He became Union Cabinet Minister for Overseas Affairs on January 30, 2006. In 2009, he retained the portfolio of Overseas Indian Affairs when UPA came to power for the second consecutive time

Murli Deora gets Corporate Affairs. Deora was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 and was gradually inducted in the Union cabinet as petroleum minister in January 2006. In UPA's second term at the centre, Deora was re-elected as the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas

MS Gill has been moved from the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry to Statistics and Programme Implementation. On April 6, 2008, Gill became the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, as a replacement for Mani Shankar Aiyar.
